The certainty of the things you have been taught
Luke 1:4 "So that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught."Doubts are funny things. Trust me, I'm an expert on funny things. So I was awfully relieved to find this verse tonight. God has provided anti-doubts (sorry, that's bad!) all over the place.
There's another one further on in the same chapter, with Zechariah.
"How can I be sure of this?" he asks the angel, about a promised son in his old age.
"I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God," he responds, "and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news."
And then he struck him mute. I hope I don't ever need such a sign!
But think about it. Think about what it would be like, to stand in the presence of God. Wow! Today was Independence Day--I just got back from the fireworks show that Sioux Center put on, and enjoyed every blasting (that's not cursing, it's describing) second. Fireworks are amazing, full of fire and light and impressive, soul-thudding booms, if you're close enough. But, there's still smoke, you know? It's not perfect. And the sparkles fade quickly, falling as charred particles back down. The presence of God won't be like that. He is all the light needed, and that glory doesn't fade. He's constant. Faithful and True, as names the Rider on the white horse.
So why doubt? I don't know. Frail humanity; human frailty. Sometimes it's just hard to keep clinging to something when you can't quite see it. But I know, in the midst of all doubts, that I've got a Rock-solid Savior and Lord.
Indubitably.
